What are the reasons why a cat leaks tears while eating?

A cat leaking tears while eating may be caused by various reasons such as foreign object stimulation, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and upper respiratory infections. If the eyes are stimulated by foreign objects, the tears are a normal phenomenon and there is generally no need to worry too much. If the tears are abnormal and accompanied by other uncomfortable symptoms, such as shortness of breath and swollen eyes, it is advised to take the cat to a regular pet hospital promptly for further diagnosis and treatment. Otherwise, it may affect the recovery of the disease.

  1. Foreign object stimulation

If food enters the cat's eyes while eating, it can stimulate the local mucous membranes and cause tears, which is a normal situation. It is necessary to clean the foreign object in the eyes, such as rinsing with running water or saline solution, which can relieve the tearful phenomenon. Generally, there is no need for drug treatment.

  1. Conjunctivitis

This is an inflammatory disease mainly occurring in the conjunctiva tissue, which may be caused by bacterial infection and immune lesions. It can cause symptoms such as redness, itching, and increased secretions, and may lead to tearful eyes when eating. Antibiotic medication can be taken under a doctor's guidance.

  1. Keratitis

Usually caused by external and internal pathogenic factors, it can cause inflammation of the cornea and lead to symptoms such as photophobia, tearfulness, and excessive eyelid spasm. Without timely treatment, it may cause corneal damage, affecting normal vision and leading to vision loss. Antibiotic eye drops can be used under a doctor's advice to help the cornea recover.

  1. Upper respiratory infection

Mainly caused by bacterial and viral infections, it can cause sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and other symptoms. As the disease progresses, it may lead to blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, causing tearfulness. Antibiotic and antiviral medication should be taken according to the doctor's advice.
