What are the reasons for a cat to shake its ears?

A cat shaking its ears may be due to reasons such as ear mites or water entering the ears. The owner can check the cat's ears, if the skin inside the ear canal is relatively red, and there is excessive secretion accompanied by a strange smell, it may be caused by ear mites. It is recommended to go to the vet for an ear canal examination to confirm the diagnosis. Moreover, water entering the cat's ears during bathing can also cause the cat to shake its ears. Care should be taken to prevent water from entering the cat's ears during bathing and to promptly help the cat dry off.

  1. Cat shaking ears caused by ear mite infection

Frequent shaking of the cat's ears may be due to an infection with ear mites. Symptoms of ear mite infection in cats include dark brown ear canal secretions, crusts, redness, itching, and more. It is recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital for a microscopic examination of the local ear canal secretions to confirm the cause of the disease, and then use targeted medication treatment.

If it is not convenient to visit the doctor temporarily, it is recommended to clean the cat's ears with ear drops 2-3 times a day, and after cleaning the ear canal, apply pet-specific broad-spectrum antiseptic and antibacterial ear drops. Meanwhile, along with the oral administration of pet-specific broad-spectrum antibiotics, local inflammation can be controlled. During treatment, the cat should wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent scratching.

When a cat shows symptoms of shaking its ears, if the cat has taken a bath recently, it is not ruled out that water entered the ear canal causing the problem. If the cat's ear canal remains damp for a long time, it can easily induce ear diseases. When giving the cat a bath, you can use ear plugs or dry towels to protect against water entering the ears. After water enters the cat's ears, it is necessary to promptly use paper towels or small cotton swabs to help wipe off the moisture.

  1. Other diseases cause cat shaking ears

A cat shaking its ears does not necessarily mean it has an ear mite infection. Diseases such as middle ear inflammation or inner ear inflammation can also cause the cat to shake its head and ears. It is recommended to go to the hospital for a diagnosis and then treat the cause.
