What are the best medications for treating parvovirus in small animals?
The basic treatment plan for parvovirus mainly consists of fluid replacement, inflammation suppression, and antiviral therapy. Parvovirus usually causes inflammation in the body of infected animals, so broad-spectrum antibiotics are needed for inflammation suppression. At the same time, interferon and monoclonal antibodies are used for antiviral therapy. To treat the vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms caused by parvovirus, anti-emetic, anti-diarrheal, and fluid replacement methods are used.
- Symptoms of parvovirus
Usually, after infection with parvovirus, the early stage mainly presents with depression, decreased appetite, increased body temperature, vomiting, and diarrhea. In the middle stage, the main symptoms are vomiting of yellow-green substances, bloody stools with a fishy smell. In the late stage, the main symptoms are lethargy, anorexia, dehydration, and persistent increase in body temperature. Therefore, when animals show the above symptoms, owners need to take them to the hospital for a parvovirus antibody test, and timely fluid replacement therapy is required after confirmation.
- Prevention of parvovirus
Parvovirus is mainly transmitted through contact, and young animals are more susceptible. Therefore, the best way to prevent parvovirus is to regularly vaccinate and enhance the antibodies in the animal's body. Under normal circumstances, it is not recommended to take animals outside before they are vaccinated. If necessary, avoid contact with other animals, and clean and disinfect the animal's paws upon returning home. It is recommended that owners vaccinate their animals with the first dose of the combined vaccine around 45 days of age, then administer another dose every 21 days thereafter, for a total of three doses. Seven days after vaccination, the antibody titer in the animal's body can be tested. Once the titer is normal, a rabies vaccine can be administered. After that, a combined vaccine and a rabies vaccine should be given annually.
