Can cats take Amoxicillin for inflammation?
Cats can take Amoxicillin for inflammation, but it must be a pet-specific dosage. There are pet-specific commercial drugs on the market that contain Amoxicillin as the main ingredient, such as Mobicure and Sun诺. Owners should never administer human Amoxicillin to their cats themselves. The dosage of human Amoxicillin is much higher than that of pet-specific drugs, and self-medication can cause liver poisoning in cats.
- Application of Amoxicillin
Amoxicillin, also known as hydroxyampicillin, can be used to treat bacterial infections in cats and dogs. It is effective against specific Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative aerobic bacteria, and many obligate anaerobic bacteria, making it a commonly used antibiotic for pets. The general oral dosage of Amoxicillin for cats is 10mg/kg, which can be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Since Amoxicillin has a time-dependent efficacy, it is crucial to maintain a blood concentration higher than the MIC most of the time. Missing a dose can cause severe insufficient efficacy, and it is generally recommended to administer the drug 2-3 times daily. The dosage of human Amoxicillin is much higher than that of pet-specific drugs.
Precautions when using Amoxicillin
The use of Amoxicillin in pets is a veterinary prescription drug and should be used under the guidance of a pet doctor. It is commonly used to treat various skin infections, stomatitis (gingivitis), urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and digestive tract infections.
Allergic reactions are strictly prohibited. Both humans and animals may be allergic to penicillin-based drugs, and cats allergic to Amoxicillin should not come into contact with or use this product. If an allergic reaction occurs, seek medical attention immediately, and treatment with adrenaline or steroids may be administered.
Pregnant queens should use Amoxicillin with caution.
Long-term use of Amoxicillin may cause adverse reactions. The usual course of Amoxicillin administration prescribed by pet hospitals is 3-7 days, depending on the recovery situation. Amoxicillin can affect the intestinal flora, potentially causing damage to the normal flora and leading to soft stools or diarrhea. If a cat experiences soft stools or diarrhea after taking Amoxicillin, the owner should immediately contact the pet doctor to report the situation, reduce the dosage or stop using Amoxicillin.
