Cat Anus Prolapse
Cat Anus Prolapse
When a cat experiences anus prolapse, the first step for the owner is to identify the cause and promptly eliminate it, as well as guide the rectum back into the anus. Anus prolapse in cats is mainly caused by persistent diarrhea or constipation, and it can also be caused by trauma. The treatment depends on the specific cause.
How to Deal with Cat Anus Prolapse
If the cat experiences anus prolapse due to persistent diarrhea or constipation, the owner should timely treat the diarrhea or constipation to avoid the rectum being detached for too long, which can lead to necrosis and contamination. The owner should first clean the detached area with metronidazole or 2% boric acid solution, then manually guide the rectum back into the anus. For anus prolapse caused by trauma, it is recommended to take the cat to the vet for treatment promptly. If the rectum has already necrosed due to being detached for too long, it is advised to take the cat to the vet for surgical treatment.
Causes of Cat Anus Redness and Swelling
Cat anus redness and swelling may be caused by long-term diarrhea or constipation, which can even lead to anus prolapse. The owner should timely stop the cat's diarrhea or promote defecation, and clean the cat's anus daily. For anal gland inflammation or anal diseases, the owner needs to help the cat express the anal gland fluid, clean the anus, and apply anti-inflammatory drugs.
How to Express Cat Anal Glands
First, the owner needs to find the position of the anal glands, which are located at 5 and 8 o'clock positions below the anus. Then, use a soft tissue to gently squeeze the glands from bottom to top with the thumb and index finger. If the anal gland fluid easily comes out, it's done. If not, it might be due to incorrect technique or no fluid present. Handle the expressed gland promptly to avoid a foul smell spreading throughout the house. It's recommended not to express the glands too frequently, as it can damage the anal glands and cause overproduction.
