What's going on when a cat burps?
A cat burping may be caused by stress response, eating too fast, foreign object blockage, catching a cold, chest deformity, or other reasons. Occasional burping in cats is normal, but if the cat burps frequently or every few days, it's abnormal and you should consider whether the cat usually eats too fast or has too much food. Secondly, if the duration of the cat's burping is long, it's also abnormal. It is recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital as soon as possible for corresponding checks to avoid exacerbating the condition.
- Stress response
If a new cat arrives at home or a cat enters a unfamiliar environment, the cat may become tense due to unfamiliarity with the surroundings and food, leading to stress response and symptoms such as burping, shivering, and lying down motionless. In this case, the owner needs to comfort the cat's emotions and help it gradually adapt to the new environment.
- Eating too fast
If a cat eats too fast, it will inhale air into its stomach, causing burping. The owner doesn't need to worry too much about this situation. You can use a slow feeder bowl to solve this problem or adjust the feeding method, just make sure the cat doesn't eat too much at once.
- Foreign object blockage
If a cat accidentally eats hair, yarn or other foreign objects, which block the gastrointestinal tract, it may cause burping. It is recommended to feed the cat an appropriate amount of hair removal cream or catnip to help the cat expel the foreign objects in its body.
- Getting cold
A cat may also develop burping symptoms after getting cold. It will also show symptoms such as running nose, coughing, and sneezing. A cat's sneezing and burping symptoms are similar, so when the temperature is low or in cold seasons, the owner should promptly prepare warm measures for the cat, such as providing a small blanket, bedding, and padding.
- Chest deformity
A cat's burping may also be caused by poor chest development, such as chest deformity. This can cause the cat's esophagus to deform, leading to abnormal burping. So after ruling out the above conditions, if the cat's burping symptoms still persist, it is necessary to take it to the pet hospital immediately to check if its chest is normal.
