Cat breathing heavily after giving birth

Cat labor and breathing issues

Cats experience rapid breathing after giving birth due to the physical exertion required during the labor process, which weakens their bodies. After labor, the cat will open its mouth to pant. At this time, you can move the cat to a larger space and provide it with oxygen to ease its breathing. After giving birth, it's essential to promptly supplement the cat's nutrition and calcium intake to prevent postpartum hypocalcemia.

Causes of postpartum rapid breathing in cats

Postpartum rapid breathing in cats is caused by the significant energy consumption during the labor process. Therefore, cats should be promptly supplemented with nutrition and water to prevent dehydration after birth. Additionally, due to breastfeeding, the cat's energy requirements increase significantly, especially its calcium demand. Therefore, calcium and other nutrients should be supplemented during the period from after birth until weaning.

Postpartum care for mother cats

The postpartum care period for mother cats generally lasts for about half a month. Postpartum care for cats mainly includes the following aspects:

  • Closely monitor the cat's lochia situation within two hours after birth. If the lochia has not completely discharged, medication should be used to assist in its release.
  • Timely supplement nutrition, adopting a few small meals approach. The cat burns a lot of energy during labor and breastfeeding. It's essential to replenish nutrients to prevent exhaustion.

What to feed mother cats after birth

After giving birth, the cat needs a significant amount of nutrients to support milk production for her kittens. Before the kittens can feed on their own, the mother cat's nutritional support cannot be stopped. Ensure daily adequate intake of carbohydrates, proteins, and trace elements. After providing sufficient cat food, supplement the cat with meat or cans containing rich protein. Additionally, daily oral administration of nutritional supplements and various calcium preparations can be given. The amount of nutrients does not need to be excessive but should be balanced, with proper dosage control.
