Cat loves to drink water but is in good spirits
Normally speaking, it is a good thing for a cat to love drinking water. Drinking water helps the cat's kidneys circulate, effectively preventing urinary tract problems such as kidney and bladder stones. It is worth noting whether the cat's water intake is excessive or if there are sudden fluctuations. This situation may indicate that the food is too salty or there is a disease causing it.
Cats are desert animals, and most of them don't drink much water. However, some cats naturally love to drink water. Cats should drink about 60 ml of water daily. This amount includes the water they get from their food. While meeting this water intake requirement, the cat's daily urination volume should also be considered. If the cat meets these conditions and has a good mental state and appetite, loving to drink water is not a bad thing. However, if the cat suddenly becomes eager to drink water, it is necessary to consider the specific reasons for this change.
The food is too salty. If the cat starts to drink more water after recently switching foods, it could be due to the new food being too salty. In this case, try switching back to the old food to see if the cat still drinks a lot of water, which will indicate whether the change in drinking habits is caused by the food.
Kidney damage. If the cat has kidney damage, it will drink a lot of water, and its urination will also be affected. Most commonly, the cat will have reduced urination or hold urine. In this case, it is necessary to take the cat to the hospital for a specific checkup.
Ascites. Observe if there is any abdominal swelling in the cat. If there is an increase in abdominal size, it is necessary to take the cat to the hospital for prompt treatment.
Uterine pyometra in female cats. The common symptoms of uterine pyometra are polydipsia and polyuria, and some cats may have a purulent discharge from the vagina. If this occurs, it is necessary to take the cat to the hospital.
Most of the above pathological conditions will be manifested in the cat's mental state, but some cats may not show any signs. Therefore, it is necessary to judge according to the specific situation.
