What does it mean when a cat opens its mouth to pant?
A cat opening its mouth to pant may be due to the surrounding environment being too hot, causing the cat to open its mouth to cool down. It could also be because the cat is scared or anxious, resulting in a stress response, such as suddenly changing environments or hearing loud noises. Both of these situations are normal physiological phenomena and will improve after the cat has a rest.
It is worth noting that if a cat continuously opens its mouth to pant for a long time, it might indicate whether the cat has heart or respiratory diseases that cause abnormal breathing. It is recommended to bring the cat to a pet hospital for inspection and treatment in time.
- High environmental temperature
Since a cat's sweat glands are not well-developed and its ability to dissipate heat is weak, when the surrounding environment is too hot, the cat will pant to dissipate heat. In this case, it is recommended for the owner to move the cat to a cooler place to rest and provide water. After the cat has rested for a while, the situation will improve.
- Stress response
Cats have a timid nature and are easily scared. When a cat is frightened, it will suffer a stress response and may pant quickly with its mouth open. For example, suddenly changing to a new environment or hearing a loud noise can cause a stress response in the cat. If this happens, the owner should gently stroke the cat to calm its nerves.
- Diseases causing hypoxia
If the above reasons are ruled out and the cat continuously pants with its mouth open for a long time, the owner should consider whether the cat may have heart or respiratory diseases, causing hypoxia. The cat will breathe quickly to get more oxygen, such as asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, or complications of other diseases such as pulmonary infection or pulmonary failure. In this case, it is recommended that the owner take the cat to a pet hospital for a detailed examination to determine the specific cause of the disease before treating it accordingly.
