Cat opens mouth, sticks out tongue, and breathes quickly
A cat opening its mouth, sticking out its tongue, and breathing quickly may be due to high environmental temperature, pneumonia, asthma, or heart disease. If the cause is high environmental temperature, the rapid breathing with the mouth open and tongue sticking out is a normal physiological phenomenon and generally does not require excessive worry. If the tongue is sticking out abnormally, and the breathing rate is fast, along with other uncomfortable symptoms such as chest pain, cough, etc., it indicates that the body has other diseases. It is recommended that the owner take the cat to a regular hospital for treatment in time, otherwise it is easy to delay the treatment time and affect the disease control.
- High environmental temperature
If the surrounding environmental temperature is high, the cat's respiratory rate will accelerate to dissipate heat internally. However, since the cat's fur is thick, it will affect skin cooling and require opening the mouth to breathe to improve the situation. Therefore, sticking out the tongue and breathing quickly is a normal phenomenon and generally does not require medication treatment.
- Pneumonia
Usually caused by bacterial and viral infections, it presents with symptoms such as rapid breathing, chest pain, cough, etc. As the disease progresses, it can lead to lung mucosal damage and tongue breathing, with the breathing rate gradually increasing. Treatment with antibiotics and antiviral drugs under a doctor's guidance is appropriate.
- Asthma
Usually caused by heredity, it manifests with symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, etc. During an attack, the breathing rate may change. Treatment involves following the doctor's advice for glucocorticoid and anticholinergic medication. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended.
- Heart disease
If a cat has heart disease, it will lead to insufficient blood supply to the myocardium, affecting normal breathing and causing symptoms such as breathing quickly and chest pain. Treatment involves following the doctor's advice for surgery.
