Purring sound in cats

Purring sounds in cats are usually normal, but in some cases, they are caused by respiratory infections. Firstly, some cats are born with the ability to make purring sounds, which is mainly related to their throat structure. Secondly, if a cat that doesn't usually make such sounds suddenly starts to do so, it's likely due to a respiratory infection that causes an increase in secretions in the throat.

  1. Normal situation

Cats usually make purring sounds when they feel comfortable, confident in their surroundings, and happy. This sound is caused by the vibration of the false vocal cords and is a normal behavior. Cat owners don't need to worry too much. When a cat makes this sound, you can gently stroke its head and back, which not only makes it feel warm and comfortable but also increases the bond between you and the cat, making it more trusting of you.

When kittens are still nursing, they may also make purring sounds while drinking milk, along with the movement of stepping on milk. As they get older, when they encounter soft objects, they will feel like they are lying on their mother's abdomen, which is comfortable and reassuring, prompting them to make purring sounds.

  1. Respiratory infection caused

If a cat exhibits symptoms of lethargy, sneezing, and nasal discharge along with purring, it is likely due to a respiratory infection. In this case, owners should consult a veterinarian immediately for medication to avoid missing the best treatment time.
