What should I do if my cat has a red scab on its head?

When a cat has a red scab on its head, it is usually due to external injuries, fungal or bacterial infections, or parasites. When a cat sustains an injury that causes bleeding, if the owner does not notice in time, the wound will heal and form a red scab, which is generally not a big deal as long as proper disinfection is performed. After excluding external injuries, it is usually a fungal, bacterial, or parasitic infection. These diseases cause damage to the cat's skin, leading to redness, itching, and other symptoms. Cats may unconsciously scratch their skin, leading to ulcers and scabs over time.

When a cat has a red scab on its head, it means that the skin is damaged and bleeding, resulting in the formation of a scab. The first step for the owner is to identify the cause of the scab and then treat it accordingly.

  1. If the cat has suffered an external injury, such as fighting with other animals or accidentally bumping into objects, the wound will form a scab after resting and healing. The owner should check if there are any other wounds on the cat's body, and generally, there is nothing to worry about.

The owner just needs to disinfect the cat's scabs daily and apply pet-specific wound ointments to the affected area. Wait for the scab to fall off naturally. However, if the wound is severe, seek immediate medical attention to avoid delaying treatment.

  1. When a cat is infected with a skin disease, such as bacterial or fungal infections, it may frequently scratch its skin due to itchiness, causing ulcers and forming scabs. Sometimes there are also scales on the skin. The wounds caused by skin diseases are usually not dry and may have exudates.

Since skin diseases cannot be visually confirmed, it is recommended to take the cat to a pet hospital for a skin scraping examination and then treat it accordingly. During treatment, clean off the scabs and scales, disinfect with physiological saline, and apply red yeast rice ointment or anti-fungal drugs.

  1. After being bitten by parasites such as fleas, cats may experience allergic reactions and severe itching on their skin. The cat cannot bear the itch and scratches its skin, leading to ulcers and scabs. If the owner finds that the cat not only has red scabs but also small black spots on the skin and fur, the cat is most likely infected with parasites and should be given an emergency deworming treatment with an external parasiteicide.
