Methods of dealing with feline dystocia
When dealing with feline dystocia, the first step is to determine the cause of the difficulty in giving birth. If it is caused by weak contractions, oxytocin can be used to help the cat give birth, and glucose water can be given to the cat during the birthing process to prevent hypoglycemia, but only if the cat's mental state is good. If the dystocia is caused by weak labor or kittens getting stuck in the birth canal, especially if the mother cat is showing signs of physical weakness and poor mental state, it is recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital in time.
Dystocia caused by weak contractions
When a cat is near the end of her pregnancy, she is prone to experiencing weak contractions. At this time, the owner can use their palm to press the abdominal wall in sync with the cat's abdominal contractions, starting light and gradually getting heavier, to stimulate stronger contractions and help the kittens be born. If massaging the cat's abdominal wall for more than 30 minutes does not lead to the birth of the kittens, it is necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital for assisted birth or cesarean section as soon as possible.
If the size of the kittens is appropriate and the cat's birth canal is clear, drugs containing oxytocin and other components can be used to promote contractions and facilitate the birth of the kittens. If the cat does not meet the above conditions, it is necessary to seek medical attention in time and consult a pet doctor.
Weak labor
If a cat is experiencing dystocia due to insufficient labor force, traction can be used to help the cat give birth. Make sure to thoroughly disinfect your hands before assisting. Additionally, medication can be administered to help the cat give birth, such as injecting oxytocin to promote uterine contractions and expel the kittens. If the injection of oxytocin is ineffective, and the cat cannot give birth to the kittens for a long time, surgical intervention may be required to remove the kittens.
Generally, within half an hour of the mother cat's water breaking, the kittens will be born. During this time, the mother cat will experience contractions and straining due to the pain, which will consume a lot of her energy. Therefore, you can feed the mother cat some energy-providing foods during labor, such as goat's milk or cat food.
Large fetus or kitten stuck in the birth canal
If the above assistance methods are ineffective, the cat may be experiencing dystocia caused by a large fetus or a kitten getting stuck in the birth canal. This situation is relatively dangerous for both the adult cat and the kittens inside the abdomen. It is recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital as soon as possible for assisted birth or cesarean section to avoid harming the cat and the fetuses.
After the mother cat has a cesarean section, the owner needs to monitor her condition and wound situation at all times.
Note: When a cat experiences dystocia, the owner should provide assistance or take the cat to the pet hospital in time.
