How to handle dog labor difficulties yourself
When dealing with dog labor difficulties, firstly, it's essential to understand the cause. If the difficulty is caused by weak uterine and birth canal contractions, you can use oxytocin or traction to assist the dog. If it's caused by malposition of the fetus, you can apply lubricant to your hand, correct the fetal position, and use forceps to extract the puppy. However, if the difficulty is caused by large fetus or narrow birth canal, it cannot be handled alone; you should timely send the dog to the hospital for a caesarean section.
- Difficulties caused by weak uterine and birth canal contractions
When a dog is in labor, it easily becomes exhausted, leading to weak uterine and birth canal contractions. You can massage the dog's abdomen or use traction, orthopedic techniques, and other midwifery measures to help the dog give birth smoothly, ensuring that the technique is correct. Additionally, you can inject an appropriate amount of oxytocin. However, if the puppy is too large or the birth canal is narrow, oxytocin cannot be used, as it may have the opposite effect and even threaten the dog's and puppy's lives.
- Difficulties caused by malposition of the fetus
If a dog has difficulty giving birth due to malposition of the fetus, you can lubricate your hand with soap or liquid paraffin, insert your right finger into the birth canal to correct the fetal position, and finally use forceps or other tools to extract the puppy, helping the dog give birth.
- Difficulties caused by large fetus, narrow birth canal, etc.
If the above midwifery measures do not work, the dog may have difficulty giving birth due to a large fetus or narrow birth canal. If the dog experiences severe bleeding during this period, the labor difficulty is considered dangerous. It is crucial to timely send the dog to the hospital for a caesarean section to avoid harming the dog and the fetus inside the abdomen.
