What is going on when a dog has bloody diarrhea and vomiting, and what drugs can be used?

If a dog who has not been vaccinated or is in the vaccination period has bloody diarrhea and vomiting, it may be caused by an infection with the parvovirus. If the dog passes stool with a rotten tomato smell and shows abnormal symptoms such as lethargy and loss of appetite, it is recommended to visit the vet promptly. Secondly, if the dog eats sharp foods, such as bones, which scratch the stomach and intestines, it will experience vomiting and bloody stools. The owner can take the dog to the hospital for an X-ray to determine the location of the bone.

1. Bloody diarrhea and vomiting caused by parvovirus in dogs

The initial symptoms of a dog infected with parvovirus include loss of appetite, lethargy, and soft stools. As the parvovirus erodes the dog's intestinal mucosa, it causes severe diffuse bleeding in the intestine, resulting in a systemic bloody smell.

The treatment for a dog with parvovirus usually involves intravenous administration of energy, antibiotics, anti-vomiting and anti-diarrhea drugs, parvovirus monoclonal antibodies, albumin, and painkillers. Canine parvovirus is one of the infectious diseases in dogs, usually occurring in puppies. The prevention method is to inject vaccines against infectious diseases on time.

2. Bloody diarrhea and vomiting caused by ingestion of foreign objects in dogs

After a dog ingests a foreign object, take it to a pet hospital for X-ray examination. If the dog swallowed a low-density object, a barium meal examination is also required. A gastricoscopy can be performed under the dog's condition permits, which can directly determine whether the dog has swallowed a foreign object. If the dog has not excreted the foreign object for a long time, it may cause gastrointestinal obstruction, leading to vomiting, anorexia, and constipation. Prolonged obstruction can even result in necrosis of the gastrointestinal tract, requiring surgical treatment.

Precautions:

When a dog shows symptoms of bloody diarrhea and vomiting, do not blindly treat it with drugs to avoid exacerbating the dog's condition. Particularly, do not give human medications to dogs.

If a dog shows abnormal symptoms such as poor mental state and loss of appetite, it is best to visit the vet promptly for examination and treatment. In cases of severe vomiting, fluid therapy should be administered.
