Dog breathing heavily while sleeping

Possible causes:

  1. Hot weather
  2. Obesity
  3. Nightmares
  4. Pneumonia
  5. Asthma
  6. Emphysema
  7. Heart disease

If the heavy breathing is caused by hot weather, obesity, or nightmares, it is a normal phenomenon and owners generally do not need to be overly concerned. If the heavy breathing is unusual and accompanied by other uncomfortable symptoms, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, it is recommended to take the dog to a regular hospital for treatment.

  1. Hot weather

If the weather is very hot and the dog's body is warm while sleeping, the dog may try to expel excess heat through breathing, causing heavy breathing. You should adjust the surrounding environment and maintain an indoor temperature of around 25°C.

  1. Obesity

If the dog is overweight, it may cause fat to compress the respiratory tract while sleeping, leading to heavy breathing and difficulty swallowing. This is a normal phenomenon and requires adjusting the diet, eating small meals frequently, and avoiding overeating. As the weight decreases, the heavy breathing will gradually improve and usually does not require medication.

  1. Nightmares

If the dog often sleeps deeply and has light sleep, it may experience accelerated breathing when having nightmares. This is a normal physiological phenomenon and does not require special treatment.

  1. Pneumonia

Caused by bacterial and viral infections, pneumonia can lead to symptoms such as coughing, expectoration, and shortness of breath. While sleeping, the dog may experience difficulty breathing and heavy breathing. Treatment under a doctor's guidance includes taking antiviral and antibiotic medications.

  1. Asthma

A chronic airway disease, asthma can be caused by factors such as genetics and exposure to pollution. It can lead to respiratory damage, affecting breathing and causing heavy breathing. Treatment includes following a doctor's advice for inhaled corticosteroid medications.

  1. Emphysema

If the dog has emphysema, it can cause lung damage, leading to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest tightness, loss of appetite, and palpitations. The dog may experience more severe breathing difficulties while sleeping. Treatment includes taking bronchodilators as prescribed and, in severe cases, surgery.

  1. Heart disease

If the dog has a heart condition, it may cause insufficient blood and oxygen supply to the myocardium, affecting normal breathing and exercise. The dog may experience heavy breathing and activity limitations, with symptoms being more apparent while sleeping. Treatment involves following the doctor's advice, which may include surgery.
