Is it normal for a puppy to breathe rapidly while sleeping?
Considering that a puppy breathing rapidly while sleeping may be caused by hot weather, poor sleeping positions, pregnancy, colds, heart diseases, or lung tumors, it is necessary to take targeted measures for treatment. This will help control the condition and restore normal breathing speed. If there is no improvement after a long period, it is recommended for the owner to bring the puppy to a regular pet hospital for treatment.
- Hot weather
Due to their poor heat dissipation system, dogs will try to cool down by opening their mouths and breathing heavily. This is a normal phenomenon and no medication is needed. Just adjust the indoor temperature to around 25°C.
- Poor sleeping positions
If a dog often sleeps on its stomach, it may compress its chest, affecting normal breathing and leading to rapid breathing. Adjust the sleeping position.
- Pregnancy
Usually, a dog's breathing while sleeping is stable. However, if the dog is a female and pregnant, her abdomen will enlarge, possibly pressing against surrounding organs and causing rapid breathing. This is a normal phenomenon, so keep an eye on the dog's physical condition.
- Colds
Caused by bacterial and viral infections, symptoms include coughing, phlegm, runny nose, and sneezing. If the secretions in the nose continue to increase, not cleaning them promptly may lead to nasal blockage and rapid breathing. Rinse with running water and follow the doctor's advice for antibiotic and antiviral medication.
- Heart diseases
If a dog has a heart disease, it may experience insufficient blood and oxygen supply, resulting in rapid breathing and accompanied by chest pain. Surgical treatment is required under a doctor's supervision.
- Lung tumors
Most are benign tumors that continue to grow and may compress the lungs, damaging the respiratory system and causing breathing difficulties. The symptoms are more prominent during sleep. Surgical removal of the tumor is an option under a doctor's guidance.
