Dog Cough Symptoms
Dog coughs can be divided into two types: dry cough and wet cough. In a dry cough, the sound is louder and there is no exudate, usually related to tracheitis, pharyngitis, heartworm, and other causes. A wet cough has a heavier sound and secretions may be sprayed from the nostrils, or the dog may have chewing movements after coughing. It may be accompanied by clinical symptoms such as fever and rapid breathing. If a dog shows symptoms of coughing, immediate identification and examination should be conducted instead of blind medication treatment.
What Causes a Dog to Cough?
When a dog coughs, the first consideration is that there is hair in the throat or the dog has inhaled a stimulating smell, causing discomfort in the throat and leading to coughing. It is recommended to take the dog to a well-ventilated place and feed it an appropriate amount of water. Secondly, if the dog's vaccination is not complete, it is not ruled out that there may be infectious diseases, such as distemper, kennel cough, canine parainfluenza, and other viral diseases.
If accompanied by symptoms such as loss of appetite, fever, and vomiting, it is best to go to the vet for relevant disease screening.
What Medicine Should a Dog Take for Coughing?
When a dog coughs, it is necessary to find the cause of the cough first, and then treat it accordingly. If it is a common cold cough, it is recommended to give the dog oral drugs containing doxycycline, ephedra-ginger-licorice ingredients, which can achieve good results in one to three days. If the cough is caused by canine parainfluenza virus, it is recommended to take oral drugs containing amoxicillin-clavulanate acid钾to control infection and inject canine interferon subcutaneously to inhibit virus reproduction.
When a dog has cough symptoms, it is necessary to use proprietary pet medications suitable for the condition, and never give the dog human medications.
How to Prevent a Dog's Cough
In seasons with low temperatures or significant temperature differences, pay attention to keeping the dog warm. You can do this by dressing the dog or using a pet electric blanket.
Regularly feed the dog, vaccinate on time, and conduct internal and external deworming. You can also take the dog for appropriate exercise and feed it high-nutrition food to enhance its resistance.
