Note that dry cough and dry heaving in dogs may be symptoms of Kennel Cough disease
Coughing and dry heaving are not necessarily serious problems. They are usually caused by cold weather or foreign objects stuck in the throat. As long as they are handled properly, there should be no issues. However, if the symptoms of dry cough and dry heaving become more frequent, dog owners need to be more cautious as this may be the initial symptoms of Kennel Cough.
Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease usually caused by viruses or bacteria in the upper respiratory tract, and it is more common in young dogs. However, this does not mean that adult dogs are immune. Due to the high contagion of the disease, even adult dogs can still be easily infected.
The main symptoms of the disease are bronchitis, which causes dry cough in dogs, and sometimes accompanied by vomiting. The dog's appetite may not change significantly. Some dogs may experience loss of appetite along with a raised temperature. The severity of the cough varies depending on the dog's level of activity and exposure to external stimuli (such as environment or food).
If you notice any abnormalities in your dog, please check and resolve them as soon as possible.
In the early stages of the disease, the dog's mental and appetite are not greatly affected, the temperature is normal, and there are no related symptoms, such as runny nose.
Since the symptoms are mild, such as dry cough, pet owners may not pay much attention to it. Even if they do, they might think it's just due to foreign objects or a common cold.
As the disease worsens, the dog's throat may swell, and coughing, spitting, and other related problems may occur. Therefore, when young dogs have similar symptoms, they can first be considered as a common cold. If the problem is resolved quickly, there should be no worries. However, if it doesn't improve for a long time, you should suspect something else. Of course, there are more than two reasons for dog coughing and vomiting. Infectious diseases and other issues can also cause these symptoms in dogs. Therefore, we should rule out these possibilities and suspect whether it is caused by Kennel Cough.
