What is going on with my dog's dry cough?
A dog's dry cough may be caused by foreign objects in the throat, internal parasites, or respiratory diseases. Here are the possible reasons:
Foreign objects in the throat: If the dog reacts sensitively or even suffers from excessive pain when you gently touch their throat, it's time to immediately open the dog's mouth and see if you can remove the object. Seek veterinary attention if necessary.
Internal parasites: A dog with a large number of parasites in its body may exhibit dry cough symptoms. Regular deworming is necessary for your dog.
Respiratory diseases: If your dog suddenly starts dry coughing for an extended period and shows other abnormal symptoms, it's advised to take them to a pet hospital for treatment.
Foreign objects in the throat:
When a dog's throat gets stuck with objects like bones, hair, dust, etc., the dog will develop a dry cough due to the constant stimulation of the throat. In some cases, the dog may also vomit. It's recommended to contact the pet doctor promptly and take emergency measures to see if the dog can cough up or remove the object stuck in their throat. If not, it's best to go to the pet hospital early for a DR examination to determine the exact location of the object and remove it using an endoscope.
Note: It's better not to feed dogs with sharp-ended bones, such as chicken, duck, and fish bones. It's recommended to feed them with meat directly.
- Internal parasites:
When a dog is infected with internal parasites like roundworms and tapeworms, the parasites swimming in the dog's body can cause dry cough symptoms. Immediate deworming is needed, and regular deworming should also be performed in the future. Generally, it's suggested to deworm the dog internally every three months and externally every month to prevent parasite infections.
- Respiratory diseases:
If a dog suddenly develops a dry cough for a long time, consider whether they might have a respiratory disease. The dog may also show symptoms like low spirits, loss of appetite, and abnormal body temperature. In this case, it's essential to take the dog to the pet hospital for inspection and treatment.
