What should I do if my dog has green eye discharge?
Eyelashes refer to the secretions of the eye, and green eye secretions in dogs may be caused by causes such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis, dacryocystitis, and corneal ulcers. When a dog is ill, it is necessary to pay attention to eye hygiene, rinse with saline, and use cotton buds to clean the secretions, which can reduce the damage to the eye area. If the condition is severe, the owner is advised to take the dog to a regular pet hospital for treatment.
- Conjunctivitis
This is a common ophthalmic disease, usually caused by infection and external stimulation. Symptoms include redness, itching, and increased secretions. When the body's inflammation increases, it can cause a change in the color of the secretions to green. Treatment requires the use of pet-specific antibiotic drops under the guidance of a doctor.
- Keratitis
This is an inflammatory disease. After infection, symptoms such as eye pain, photophobia, lacrimation, and eyelid spasm may occur. It can also cause purulent secretions, which turn green after contact with air. Treatment requires antibiotics according to the doctor's advice.
- Blepharitis
This is an acute suppurative inflammatory lesion of the eyelid gland, usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection. It causes redness, swelling, and pain at the site. When local suppuration occurs, green secretions can be seen, accompanied by a foul smell. Treatment requires obedience to the doctor's advice to use antibiotic ointments.
- Dacryocystitis
Usually caused by Streptococcus infection, it leads to narrowing and blockage of the lacrimal duct to the nasolacrimal duct, affecting the normal secretion of tears. The secretions then accumulate in the eye area, causing green or white secretions. Treatment requires obedience to the doctor's advice for incision and drainage.
- Corneal Ulcer
This refers to the inflammation and necrosis of the corneal tissue, which causes decreased vision. In severe cases, it may cause inflammation of the cornea, leading to green secretions. Severe cases can cause blindness. Treatment requires surgical treatment under the doctor's guidance.
During treatment, the owner needs to take the dog to the hospital regularly for checkups to understand the recovery progress.
