Can dog grooming cool them down?

Dog grooming cannot truly cool down dogs. This is because dogs don't have sweat glands on their skin, so even after shaving them, they cannot achieve significant heat dissipation. It may slightly enhance heat transfer, but the effect is minimal. Dogs' sweat glands are mainly concentrated in their paws. When a dog's body temperature rises, you can usually feel that their paws are moist.

It is not recommended to shave dogs for everyday purposes. Many pet owners believe that shaving dogs can help lower their body temperature, but this is actually a serious misconception. Dogs' sweat glands are mainly in their paws, while their body skin has almost no sweat glands. Even if the dog's hair is completely shaved off, it does almost nothing to enhance heat dissipation. However, it does increase the risk of the dog's skin being exposed to UV rays in sunlight and being bitten by mosquitoes.

When the ambient temperature is quite high, you can help dogs cool down by following these methods. First, it is not recommended to take dogs outside for a walk during hot weather, as this can easily lead to heatstroke. It is better to place dogs in a shady and well-ventilated environment, avoiding stuffy and humid areas. Prolonged exposure to such conditions can also trigger heatstroke. You can prepare cooling mats for dogs, such as ice mats, or pet mats that can be filled with water. If the environment is too hot, you can use air conditioning for the dog, but it is not recommended for dogs with low resistance or those who are not yet adults, as this can lead to illness or worsen related clinical symptoms. Since a dog's body temperature is much higher than a human's, it is advised to set the air conditioning temperature between 27-28°C. If the temperature is too low, it can also easily cause the dog to become sick due to cold exposure.
