What to pay attention to when dealing with canine parainfluenza

Pay attention to keeping the dog warm, disinfecting regularly at scheduled times, maintaining air circulation, and ensuring adequate water intake. Dogs with elevated body temperature can take oral fever-reducing medication. For severe coughing, a expectorant cough syrup can be used to alleviate the condition. However, the most important factor is body temperature: if the dog has a high fever, it must be controlled, otherwise it can lead to respiratory failure, which has a low cure rate.

Symptoms of canine parainfluenza

The dog's body temperature rises to 39.5-40.5 degrees, with symptoms including severe coughing, sneezing, and sticky or thick nasal discharge. The dog may have rapid breathing, a coarse breathing sound when listening to the bronchi, and an accelerated heartbeat. In severe cases, there may be respiratory arrhythmia, red conjunctiva, lacrimation, lethargy, weak limbs, and loss of appetite. When mixed with mycoplasma or bronchial bacterial infection, the condition worsens, with severe dry cough that can last for weeks.

Will canine parainfluenza recur?

Canine parainfluenza will not recur in the short term. About 1-3 months after the infection, the antibody level remains high, and the dog usually does not get infected again. However, it is necessary to get regular immunizations later, such as the six-in-one or eight-in-one vaccine, which can prevent parainfluenza.

How to treat canine parainfluenza

Intravenous drip of canine plasma can be used to enhance the dog's resistance. Alternatively, broad-spectrum antiviral drug acyclovir 10-20 mg/kg body weight can be given intravenously for 10 days, or ribavirin capsules 10-20 mg/kg body weight can be taken orally for 7 days. For dogs with elevated body temperature, Panjiefu capsules can be given orally, 1-3 capsules each time, 3-4 times a day. When a dog is infected with parainfluenza, it often leads to secondary infections of bronchial bacterial pneumonia and mycoplasma. Therefore, using antibiotics or sulfa drugs can prevent secondary infections and alleviate the condition.
