Causes of Orchitis

Acute orchitis is commonly caused by infection with canine Brucella. Some fungal diseases, such as blastomycosis and coccidioidomycosis, can also cause granulomatous orchitis. Trauma to the testicles and epididymis may sometimes cause inflammation and infection. Dogs with scrotal dermatitis often lick their scrotum, which can lead to bacterial infections of the underlying testicles and epididymis.

Symptoms of Orchitis

The main symptoms of orchitis in male dogs are swollen, hot, and painful testicles, with a tight scrotum. In severe cases, there may even be purulent infections on the skin. To treat the infection, topical antibacterial ointments are applied, and oral or injected antibiotics are given.

Treatment of Orchitis

Systemic treatment involves the use of antibiotics and local drainage to reduce secretions within the testicles. Dogs with positive Brucella tests, severe testicular damage, abscesses, or necrosis require testicle removal. During treatment, dogs should wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent them from licking the area.
