Is dog interdigital inflammation easy to treat?
Some pet owners may be familiar with the term interdigital inflammation, which is a common disease in dogs. The infection sources vary and include bacteria (such as staphylococcus), fungi, mites, or mixed infections, with fungal infections being the most common. So what are the symptoms of interdigital inflammation? And how can we prevent it?
What are the symptoms of interdigital inflammation?
The symptoms of infected interdigital inflammation include a small growth resembling a pimple or zit between the dog's toes or on its foot, which gradually grows larger and may contain pus or blood. Some cases may become severely swollen, causing the dog to limp due to pain. The swelling may be red and swollen or develop into abscesses.
What causes interdigital inflammation?
Long-term confinement in a cage, which causes the dog's paw pads to be exposed to moisture, creating an environment conducive to the disease.
Infrequent nail trimming and shaving of the bottom of the feet, leading to long hair that promotes humidity and fosters the occurrence of interdigital inflammation.
Wetting the dog's paws after outdoor walks or not drying them properly after washing leads to the disease.
Accidental scrapes or wounds on the paws while playing outdoors that aren't promptly treated can also result in infection and subsequent interdigital inflammation.
How can we prevent interdigital inflammation?
Keep the living environment dry and well-ventilated.
Regularly bathe your dog, dry its paws thoroughly, and trim its nail and fur regularly.
Inspect your dog's paw pads regularly and remove any moisture or red deposits at the nail base promptly. Disinfect the area with hydrogen peroxide.
Avoid keeping your dog in a cage for an extended period.
Dry your dog's paws promptly if they get wet during walks.
Although treating interdigital inflammation seems simple, pet owners should not be complacent! The sooner the treatment begins, the faster the recovery, and the later the treatment, the more severe and harder to cure the condition becomes.
How do you treat interdigital inflammation?
Squeeze out the pus, clean the wound, dry the affected area, apply medication, and bandage it.
Severe cases require topical oral medication, with the bottom of the foot requiring a new dressing every day. Recommended medications include Shuangbao Kangao Ointment or A-PaiKang Ointment.
Keep the foot dry, and ensure your dog wears a neck collar to prevent repeated licking of the wound, which could exacerbate the infection.
