Symptoms of Dog Intestinal Obstruction

The main symptoms of dog intestinal obstruction are: decreased mental appetite, increased water intake, abdominal wall tension, severe abdominal pain, refusal to touch the abdominal wall, increased vomiting, even vomiting of fecal-like substances, decreased or even stopped defecation. Abdominal auscultation shows initial hyperactivity, followed by weakening, and finally disappearing. The dog's weight decreases significantly, showing signs of dehydration. Severe cases can lead to secondary intestinal perforation, rupture, shock caused by acid-base imbalance, and even death. The best treatment for dog intestinal obstruction is surgical treatment. If discovered in time, the prognosis for surgical treatment is generally good.

  1. Early Symptoms of Dog Intestinal Obstruction

The early symptoms of dog intestinal obstruction mainly manifest as: depression, loss of appetite, persistent vomiting, and pain upon pressing the abdomen. The vomit in the early stage contains undigested food and mucus, followed by bile or intestinal contents. If this condition is not treated promptly, the dog is likely to become dehydrated and faint due to frequent vomiting and pain, leading to shock and death.

  1. Treatment of Dog Intestinal Obstruction

Dog intestinal obstruction refers to the symptom of inability of intestinal contents to descend due to various causes, such as intussusception, intestinal stricture, and intestinal foreign bodies. It can be treated conservatively with drugs or surgically.

  1. Conservative Treatment

Conservative treatment for dog intestinal obstruction generally refers to using agents to promote gastrointestinal peristalsis or using edible oil to soften the stool, solving the dog's intestinal obstruction. The dog usually recovers after 2-3 days of treatment.

  1. Surgical Treatment

For intestinal obstruction caused by foreign bodies or intussusception, conservative treatment is not suitable and surgery is required. The dog usually recovers after surgery, but attention should be paid to postoperative care.

Note: During treatment, owners need to pay attention to the dog's diet. It is recommended to feed the dog light food, which is beneficial for the dog's recovery. Also, avoid feeding the dog hard objects in daily life to prevent the recurrence of intestinal obstruction.
