Dog keeps farting and it smells really bad
Farting clinically refers to gas excretion. A dog that constantly farts and has a bad smell is considered a normal phenomenon, but it could also be caused by conditions such as enteritis, gastritis, gastric ulcers, and rectal tumors. This can be improved through general treatment, medication, or surgery, and treatment is beneficial for the normalization of gas excretion. If the condition continues to worsen, it is recommended that the owner take the dog to a regular pet hospital for treatment promptly, otherwise it may delay the treatment time and affect the recovery of the condition.
- Normal phenomenon
Farting is a normal phenomenon. After eating, if a large amount of air enters the stomach, it will be expelled through farting, which is a normal situation and does not require special treatment.
- Enteritis
Enteritis is an inflammatory reaction of the intestine usually caused by microbial infection and immune dysfunction. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stools, and severe dehydration and electrolyte disorders. Farting and a bad smell occur during defecation, and antibiotics and anti-diarrhea medication should be taken according to the doctor's advice.
- Gastritis
Gastritis is usually caused by an unhealthy diet and presents with middle to upper abdominal pain and bloating. When bloating occurs, it means there is a large amount of gas in the stomach, which is released through farting, and it smells bad. Medical treatment includes taking pet-specific antibiotics and digestive enzymes as directed by the doctor.
- Gastric ulcers
Gastric ulcers may be caused by abnormal immune mechanisms and Helicobacter pylori infection. They can lead to severe abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and impairment of normal digestion and absorption, resulting in increased gas excretion and a bad smell. Treatment involves taking protective gastric mucosa medication as prescribed.
- Rectal tumors
Rectal tumors are common in the digestive system and are usually caused by an unhealthy diet and genetic factors. They can cause lumps in the rectal area and possibly damage the digestive system, leading to gas and a bad smell. Surgical removal of the tumor is necessary under a doctor's supervision.
