Can a dog stay without stitch removal after neutering?
Yes, it is possible for a dog to stay without stitch removal after neutering. The stitches used to close the wound after neutering are usually absorbable, and the skin's surface absorption rate is somewhat weaker. Removing the stitches can help the wound heal better. Generally, 7-10 days after the neutering procedure, you can take the dog to the veterinary hospital to have the stitches removed. After the neutering surgery, be sure to wear an Elizabethan collar on the dog to prevent them from licking the wound. Do not allow the dog to eat immediately after the neutering procedure to avoid gastrointestinal reactions while the dog is still under anesthesia.
First, before taking the dog for neutering, fasting and water deprivation should be implemented for 8 hours in advance. When going to the veterinary hospital, the dog needs to undergo a pre-operative biochemical examination to assess the dog's physical condition. Although stitches are not necessary after neutering, it is still recommended to have the stitches removed 7-10 days after the procedure to promote better wound healing.
Secondly, do not feed the dog immediately after neutering just because they were fasting and dehydrated before the surgery. It is suggested to feed the dog about 6 hours after the operation. Start with easily digestible food and feed in small amounts to avoid causing gastrointestinal discomfort in the dog. After neutering, restrict the dog's exercise to prevent the wound from opening due to excessive movement.
Lastly, neutering a dog is generally beneficial than harmful. Neutering can prevent the dog from suffering reproductive system diseases such as uterine pyelonephritis, ovarian cysts, and testicular cancer, and can also prolong the dog's life to a certain extent. Therefore, if there is no requirement for the dog to breed, it is advised to have the neutering procedure done on the dog when they are around 6 months old, avoiding the breeding period. Additionally, neutering can also change the dog's personality, making them more affectionate and gentle.
