Dog has been panting all night and hasn't given birth yet

Dog panting during labor can be caused by factors such as stress, pain, and fetal compression. However, due to the varying physical conditions of dogs, the symptoms prior to labor may differ. Generally, this type of breathing lasts for 30 to 40 minutes and results in the birth of the puppies. But if the dog hasn't given birth after an hour, it may indicate difficulties during labor or respiratory diseases.

When a dog panting all night hasn't given birth yet, the owner needs to determine the following points:

1. Confirm if the dog is in labor

Usually, dogs in labor show other symptoms, such as a slight increase in body temperature of about 0.5 degrees Celsius, restlessness, frequent scratching of the floor or other objects with their paws, and milk can be extracted from the dog's breasts. After the amniotic sac ruptures, there will be secretions from the vulva. If the dog shows these symptoms before panting, it indicates that the dog is indeed in labor. If the dog has been panting all night but hasn't given birth to any puppies, it means the dog is experiencing difficulties during labor. In this case, to prevent the dog and the puppies from facing life-threatening risks, it is recommended that the owner take the dog to a pet hospital for an ultrasound or X-ray examination to determine the position of the fetus and proceed with a cesarean section as soon as possible.

2. Caused by respiratory diseases

If the dog doesn't show other clinical symptoms of labor, it's essential to consider whether the dog has respiratory diseases such as tracheitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, or pulmonary edema. When a dog has these diseases, it will pant and have difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, it can lead to suffocation and death. Therefore, the owner should take the dog to a pet hospital for an X-ray examination of the chest and upper respiratory tract and perform a complete blood count to determine if there is inflammation in the body. Based on the specific examination results, appropriate cough suppressants and anti-inflammatory drugs should be used for treatment.
