Dog suddenly urinates blood

There are many causes for a dog to suddenly urinate blood, mainly including severe trauma, urinary tract infection, urolithiasis, and renal hematuria. Hematuria is a serious symptom and often indicates abnormalities of the urethra, bladder, and kidneys. Clinical manifestations include a large number of red blood cells in the urine, accompanied by systemic or spontaneous symptoms. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.

Here are the main causes of sudden hematuria in dogs:

  1. Consider severe trauma, such as a dog being hit or run over by a vehicle, which can cause bladder, urethral, or renal damage, leading to hematuria. This condition usually occurs within a short period after the severe trauma.

  2. Consider urinary tract infection, which includes common diseases such as cystitis and urethritis. Clinical manifestations of inflammatory urinary tract infections include frequent urination, cloudy urine, hematuria, and sometimes purulent discharge.

  3. Urolithiasis, where there are stones or crystals in the urethra or bladder. These stones or crystals stimulate the urethral and bladder mucosa, causing mucosal bleeding. Clinical manifestations include frequent urination, hematuria, and urinary retention. If the dog does not urinate for a long time, abdominal distension may occur, and in severe cases, bladder expansion and rupture may occur.

  4. Renal hematuria, mainly including renal calculi, acute renal failure, and other serious diseases. Clinical manifestations include frequent urination, hematuria, and sometimes marked decrease in urine output, urinary retention, and other severe conditions.

Sudden hematuria in dogs usually indicates severe urinary system diseases. It is recommended to bring the dog to a pet hospital promptly for related examinations and treatments to avoid delay in the diagnosis and progression of the disease, leading to more fatal conditions. The treatment principle for hematuria in dogs is to actively treat the primary disease, and simultaneously use hemostatic and anti-inflammatory drugs. Hemostatic drugs include those containing hemostatic enzymes, such as tranexamic acid, and anti-inflammatory drugs.
