Excessive Drooling in Cats

First, find the cause of the problem, and then give appropriate treatment. Cats drooling excessively may have oral inflammation, pharyngitis, or gingivitis. If it is just mild drooling, you can replace the cat's usual drinking water with warm salt water and give it oral vitamin B2. For more severe cases, you can add some antibiotics. If the cat has excessive drooling and loss of appetite, you must go to the hospital, and tooth extraction may be necessary.

Drooling from the Mouth

Many diseases can cause cats to drool. For example:

  1. Oral and salivary gland diseases: Direct stimulation of the salivary glands by foreign objects, injuries, and pathogenic microorganisms increases saliva production.
  2. Esophageal diseases that cause difficulty swallowing, leading to a large amount of saliva flowing from the mouth, such as esophageal obstruction and esophageal paralysis.
  3. Toxic diseases, such as organophosphorus poisoning, which can also cause increased secretion.

These diseases should not be ignored. If your cat shows symptoms of drooling, it's best to go to the hospital for a checkup to determine the cause.

Drooling in Cats Forming Water Drops

If a cat has excessive drooling that forms water drops, it may be due to a feline calicivirus infection. If the cat shows symptoms such as oral ulcers, inflamed gums, water bubbles around the tongue, and stomatitis, it is highly suspected of having contracted the calicivirus. Treating a cat infected with the calicivirus is complicated and takes a long time, and the cat may carry the virus for life.
