Feline Cataract Symptoms

Cat cataract symptoms are mainly characterized by changes in the color of the pupil to white and declining vision. For example, walking slowly in dark or unfamiliar environments, easily colliding with other objects, inability to see objects thrown overhead, appearance of strabismus, being easily startled, abnormal sensitivity to surrounding sounds, and ignoring dangers. If you suspect that your cat has cataracts, the first step is to undergo a comprehensive ophthalmic examination to assess your cat's eyes comprehensively and determine whether the cat is suitable for surgical treatment.

Causes of Feline Cataracts

  1. Feline cataracts can be divided into congenital and acquired types. Congenital cataracts are mainly caused by incomplete development of the lens and its capsule, often associated with genetics. Particularly in certain cat breeds, including Persians, Himalayans, and domestic short-haired cats. If your cat is one of these breeds, regular eye examinations are necessary. If signs of cataracts are found, hurry to the pet hospital for inspection.

  2. Acquired cataracts are mainly caused by retinitis, glaucoma, diabetes, etc., which also lead to cataracts.

  3. Additionally, older cats are more susceptible to cataracts due to degenerative changes in the lens.

How to Judge Cataracts in Cats

When a cat has cataracts, the eyes will show signs of lens opacity, causing decreased vision and slow walking. At the same time, the cat's tears will be significantly more than before, and there will be more secretions at the corners of the eyes. If you notice these symptoms in your cat, timely inspection and treatment at a pet hospital are necessary. If cataracts are not treated effectively for a long time, they may lead to blindness.

What to Do About Feline Cataracts

When a cat has cataracts, the lens becomes opaque, affecting the cat's vision and potentially leading to blindness. Therefore, if the owner discovers cataract symptoms in the cat, they should take the cat to the pet hospital for inspection and treatment using surgical methods. The surgery involves removing the opaque substances in the lens. If the cataracts are severe and untreatable, the lens needs to be removed along with the cataracts and replaced with a new lens.

Note: During the cat's eye treatment, the owner should pay attention to the hygiene and cleanliness of the living environment to prevent eye infections caused by bacteria.
