Feline Urethral Obstruction

Total cat urinary tract obstruction may be caused by the cat's stress response, accompanied by tension and fear, resulting in prolonged holding of urine, which leads to urinary tract obstruction. Urinary tract obstruction requires early drainage of urine. In addition, feline urinary tract obstruction is mainly due to abnormal filtration of glomeruli, allowing large molecules to enter the ureter and reach the urethra, gradually accumulating and forming obstructions in the urinary tract.

Causes of Urethral Obstruction

There are many causes of urethral obstruction, with common causes being urethral stones that cause obstruction. This may be related to insufficient drinking water or lack of exercise. It is also related to urethritis. Severe urethritis can cause mucosal ulcers and necrosis, leading to severe consequences such as urethral obstruction. It is recommended to seek medical attention in a timely manner.

Treatment of Urethral Obstruction

Cat urinary tract obstruction requires drainage of urine after inserting a catheter, which cleanses the urethra and allows for normal urination. Since the cat's urethra is relatively narrow, once debris accumulates, it prevents urine from being expelled, leading to urinary tract diseases. Carefully insert the catheter into the urethra, and use physiological saline to repeatedly rinse and dislodge the stones. After the stones are dislodged, abdominal compression can be applied to the bladder to facilitate urine drainage. Later, cats require antibiotics and medications for urinary tract diseases to prevent secondary infections and recurrences, ensuring unobstructed urinary tracts.

Catheterization Efficacy

Usually, cats can normally urinate 1 to 3 days after catheterization. After catheterization, owners should give cats oral antibiotics and medications for urinary tract diseases on time. This prevents secondary infections and recurrences of urinary tract diseases, preventing urinary tract obstruction from occurring again. Generally, catheters can be removed 3 days after catheterization, but owners should pay attention to cat care during this time to prevent urinary tract infections.
