Symptoms of Golden Retriever getting parvovirus
Parvovirus is a highly contagious infectious disease with high contact transmission. It can be divided into enteritis and myocarditis in clinical manifestations. The general symptoms in puppies are: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, depression, and loss of appetite. In adult dogs, the symptoms are: decreased appetite, low spirits, diarrhea, severe vomiting, and even thinning stool. This disease has a high mortality rate, but early treatment can be effectively controlled.
What are the symptoms of parvovirus in dogs?
Dogs infected with parvovirus can be divided into enteritis and myocarditis types. Enteritis type: initially shows depression, anorexia, occasional fever, soft stools, and mild vomiting, which later develops into frequent vomiting and severe diarrhea. The stool initially appears gray, yellow, or milky white with jelly-like mucous, later releasing fetid dark brown or tomato juice-like bloody stools. The dog will rapidly dehydrate, lose weight, have deep eye sockets, rough hair, lose elasticity in the skin, have cold limbs, be extremely depressed, enter a state of shock, and die. The mild to severe symptoms usually do not exceed two days. Myocarditis symptoms: commonly seen in puppies 4-6 weeks old, often without precursor symptoms, followed by sudden weakness, moaning, mucosal cyanosis, extreme difficulty breathing, rapid and weak pulse, heart murmur, and often die suddenly within a few hours. On autopsy, the heart is found to be expanded, with pale stripes in the myocardium and the general signs of congestive heart failure.
How to quickly treat parvovirus in dogs?
Use gentamicin, vitamin C, and glucose injections for two days. On the third day, use traditional Chinese medicine decoctions made from白头翁, 乌梅, 黄连, 黄柏, 郁金, 诃子 to cool and detoxify. Continue fluid therapy on the fourth day, replacing the serum with parvovirus monoclonal antibodies, and continue to feed the dog traditional Chinese medicine. On the sixth day, add some vitamin tablets and glucose to the dog's food during feeding. On the seventh day, to prevent recurrence, the dog can be given a shot of antibody.
What should be noted during the treatment of parvovirus in dogs?
When the dog's condition improves and it starts to eat, it should be fed small meals frequently, gradually increasing the amount of food. Do not suddenly eat too much to cause gastrointestinal discomfort and lead to diarrhea again. After feeding, you can give the dog medication such as Methenamine Hippurate or Multivitamin Tablets to help with digestion. For dogs that have stopped bleeding but still have diarrhea and can eat, you can give them diarrhea medication such as Silicate Carbonate or Hyponatremia Tablets. Be sure to keep the dog warm in winter. Do not bath the dog immediately after it gets sick; disinfect the kennel thoroughly; and isolate multiple dogs in the household.
