Golden Retriever Always Salivates

Dogs may salivate for various reasons. When the weather is hot, dogs will salivate to cool down. Administration of medication can cause salivation due to stimulation of the salivary glands. Chemical substances in the home may also trigger salivation after being licked by the dog. Furthermore, oral diseases or excessive excitement can lead to this symptom.

Reason 1 for Golden Retriever's Salivation

There are physiological and pathological reasons for a Golden Retriever's salivation. Physiologically, salivation occurs when the dog sees food it wants to eat or when it's too hot, and it cannot cool down through its skin, so it licks its tongue and salivates to regulate its body temperature. Pathologically, salivation is caused by nerve paralysis, which may result from poisoning or seizures. There may be other symptoms such as poor mental state and loss of appetite.

Reason 2 for Golden Retriever's Salivation

Usually, a Golden Retriever's saliva production is minimal. If the owner notices an increase in the dog's saliva production, it may be due to the following reasons:

• Oral diseases such as stomatitis, oral ulcers, and gingivitis. In this case, the owner should first rinse the dog's mouth with 3% boric acid solution and then feed the dog antibiotics for treatment.
• After participating in intense physical activity, the dog's saliva production increases.
• Foreign objects in the dog's throat. The owner should remove the foreign object and administer antibiotics.

What to Do About Golden Retriever's Salivation

Salivation can be caused by poisoning, teething, irritating substances, allergies, excessive exercise, and brain injuries. If the salivation is caused by poisoning, take the dog to a pet hospital for treatment promptly. For salivation during teething, enhance the dog's nutrition, supplement calcium and vitamins. For allergic salivation, seek medical treatment for desensitization. For salivation caused by excessive exercise, allow the dog to rest appropriately.
