What should I do if my dog starts drooling suddenly?

Dog suddenly starts drooling may be due to poisoning, oral diseases, foreign objects in the throat, hot weather, rabies, etc. If your dog's mental state and appetite are good, it may be because in order to dissipate heat in hot summer, the dog secretes a large amount of saliva. It is recommended to provide enough drinking water and let the dog rest in a shady place. However, if the dog's symptoms are severe, with depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, seizures and other abnormal symptoms, it is necessary to seek medical attention promptly.

  1. Poisoning

If your dog starts drooling suddenly and is accompanied by symptoms such as seizures, dilated pupils, froth at the mouth, rapid breathing, etc., it is likely poisoning. In severe cases, even shock and death may occur. Therefore, when a dog shows symptoms of poisoning, it is necessary to immediately take the dog to a pet hospital for inspection to determine the specific toxicity, and then choose the corresponding antidote treatment. If necessary, vomiting or gastric washing treatment may be required.

  1. Oral diseases

When a dog suffers from oral diseases such as stomatitis, periodontitis, and oral ulcers, it will also show continuous drooling. At the same time, there will be symptoms such as swollen and painful gums, reduced appetite, and difficulty eating. In this case, the owner can gently open the dog's mouth with their hand to check the condition of the oral mucosa and gums, and consult a pet doctor to determine the specific cause, then take corresponding treatment measures.

  1. Foreign objects in the throat

If there is an object stuck in a dog's throat, it will cause strong discomfort and lead to continuous drooling. In this case, it is recommended to take the dog to a pet hospital as soon as possible to remove the object. If the object is shallowly stuck, it can be removed directly through the mouth. If it is stuck deeper, a radiograph is usually required to determine the exact location of the object, and then the object can be surgically removed.

  1. Hot weather

Because dogs have underdeveloped sweat glands, when the weather is hot or the surrounding environment temperature is high, dogs will show mouth-opening and tongue-outing behavior to help the body cool down through evaporating saliva, resulting in continuous drooling. At this time, as long as the dog does not show other abnormalities, you can take the dog to a shady and well-ventilated place to rest, and prepare enough water. After the dog rests for a while, it will improve.

  1. Rabies

If a dog drools continuously while showing symptoms such as photophobia, hydrophobia, and indiscriminate attacks on people, it is likely that the dog has contracted rabies. In this case, the owner must maintain a safe distance from the dog to avoid being accidentally injured and contact relevant departments for disposal.
