How long do puppies take to open their eyes

Puppies usually open their eyes between 7 and 15 days after birth. Puppies with good health, activity, and vitality may open their eyes earlier, around 7 days. Puppies who are more quiet and less active may open their eyes between 15 and 20 days. If the puppy hasn't opened its eyes during this period, do not forcefully pry open its eyes with your hands. Once injured, it can cause unpredictable damage to the puppy's eyes. Daily, you can use a cotton swab dipped in a suitable amount of physiological saline to wipe the puppy's eyes, stimulating it to open and clearing the secretions around the eyes.

1. Precautions before the puppy opens its eyes

Usually, puppies open their eyes between days 9 and 15 after birth (the earliest is on day 7, and the latest can be between 15 and 20 days). Before the puppy opens its eyes, special care should be taken for those with weaker bodies. Weak puppies can be helped artificially. When the mother dog is nursing, the weaker puppies should be placed near the milk-rich nipples.

2. Do not forcefully pry open the puppy's eyes

If the puppy hasn't opened its eyes in about 20 days, do not forcefully pry them open with your hands. Once injured, it can cause unpredictable damage to the puppy's eyes.

3. Stimulate the puppy to open its eyes with physiological saline

If the puppy hasn't opened its eyes after 20 days, you can use a cotton swab dipped in a suitable amount of physiological saline to wipe around the puppy's eyes, stimulating it to open and clearing the secretions and tears around the eyes. If the puppy still can't open its eyes after a few days of trying this method, it is recommended to take the puppy to a regular pet hospital for consultation.
