How to deal with fleas on kittens?
Kittens can get fleas through physical removal or external parasite control. If the kitten is younger than 8 weeks old and weighs less than 1 kilogram, it is recommended to remove fleas physically. If the kitten is older than 3 months and weighs more than 1 kilogram, you can use external parasite control products to get rid of fleas. Meanwhile, since fleas are highly contagious, if you have other cats at home, it's also necessary to take parasite prevention measures. Furthermore, fleas will lay eggs in the environment, so it's essential to keep the living environment clean and free of pests.
- Physical removal of fleas
For very young kittens, the safest method is to physically remove fleas. So it's recommended to use a dense comb to brush the kitten's hair, which will catch the fleas and then use tape to stick them onto detergent to kill them. However, owners should also note that they shouldn't squash the caught fleas with their hands. Squashing the fleas will only release their eggs, which could still infect the kitten.
- Using external parasite control products to remove fleas
If the kitten weighs more than 1 kilogram and is older than 3 months, you can use external parasite control products to remove fleas. When purchasing, pay attention to the product's instructions to confirm that the kitten meets the applicable age and use it as required. However, if the kitten is younger than 3 months or weighs less than 1 kilogram, it's necessary to go to a professional pet hospital and consult a veterinarian before selecting an appropriate parasite control product and dosage.
- Cleaning and pest control in the environment
Since fleas are highly contagious, it's essential to disinfect the environment and items the kitten has come into contact with thoroughly. You can spray some flea-specific parasite control sprays, such as those containing non-pyrrolone, which can effectively kill flea eggs and adult fleas. If you have other cats at home, you'll also need to take parasite prevention measures.
Note: Generally, kittens can start parasite control from six weeks old, with monthly external parasite control and 3-4 monthly internal parasite control. Avoid bathing for a week after using parasite control products.
