How to determine if a dog has completely given birth
To determine if a dog has completely given birth, you can use the following methods:
Observe if the dog still has contractions. If the dog stops having contractions and has an appetite, it's usually done giving birth.
Perform a manual examination of the dog's abdomen to see if you can clearly feel the fetuses. If not, it means the dog has finished giving birth.
Check if the dog's placenta has been expelled. If you see the placenta slide out smoothly and the dog doesn't continue to strain, it means the dog has completely given birth.
Bring the dog to a pet hospital for an ultrasound examination. This is the most accurate way to determine if the dog has given birth.
Observe if the dog still has contractions after giving birth:
After giving birth, dogs generally stop having contractions, and their abdomens shrink. However, the abdomen won't shrink to its normal size for a short time. The female dog will then begin to accept her puppies' suckling and gradually start seeking food on her own. If the dog stops having contractions and has an appetite, it's usually done giving birth.
- Perform a manual examination of the dog's abdomen:
After all the puppies are born, the dog's abdomen will become flat and soft to the touch, without any hard lumps. At this point, the owner can try to touch the dog's abdomen to feel if there are still fetuses present. If not, it means the dog has finished giving birth.
- Check if the dog's placenta has been expelled:
After the dog expels all the fetuses, it will expel the placenta. If the owner sees the placenta slide out smoothly and the dog doesn't continue to strain, it means the dog has completely given birth.
- Conduct an ultrasound examination at a pet hospital:
If the owner is unsure, they can take the dog to a nearby pet hospital for an ultrasound examination to check if there are still fetuses in the uterus. This is the most accurate way to determine if the dog has given birth.
Note: If a dog has difficulty giving birth and retains dead fetuses, it may develop complications such as endometritis, infertility, and sepsis. Therefore, when suspected of having unexpelled fetuses, the dog should be taken to a veterinarian promptly for removal.
