How to feed a puppy that has just reached its first month

1. Food selection

First, gradually wean the puppy off breast milk. After weaning, it is recommended to feed the puppy a combination of breast milk and milk formula food to avoid causing stomach discomfort. If there is no breast milk, goat's milk can be used as an alternative. Continue this feeding method until the puppy is six months old. When feeding the puppy, soak the milk formula food until it softens and ensure the temperature is suitable before feeding it. Puppies under one month old have poor digestion, so it's important to stick to the principle of feeding in small amounts frequently – approximately 3 to 4 times a day. If the puppy experiences diarrhea or other stomach discomfort during the feeding process, consult a veterinarian and consider giving it probiotics or kaolin specifically designed for pets.

2. Feeding method

After weaning, gradually transition the puppy from breast milk to dog food. The recommended feeding method is to alternate between breast milk and solid food. The solid food should be milk formula-based, as it has a similar nutritional profile to breast milk and is easy for the puppy to digest and absorb, reducing the risk of diarrhea, vomiting, or indigestion.

If the puppy has separated from its mother, you can use goat's milk formula and milk formula-based dog food. This combination is usually recommended until the puppy is six months old. If there is no milk formula-based dog food, you can choose a puppy food with similar ingredients. However, it is not advisable to feed the puppy human food or dog food with low cost-performance. You can also supplement the puppy's diet with nutritional supplements, but dog food should still be the main source of nourishment.

3. Feeding frequency

When feeding a puppy that has just reached its first month, stick to the principle of feeding in small amounts frequently. Generally, feed the puppy 3 to 4 times a day to avoid overfeeding and causing indigestion. If the puppy experiences indigestion, you can feed it a suitable amount of probiotics or kaolin to promote gastrointestinal peristalsis and aid digestion.
