How to Judge if a Cat has Ear Mites

Cats with ear mites can be diagnosed through clinical symptoms and scraping microscopy. After a cat contracts ear mites, symptoms such as unusual smells in the ear, black secretions in the ear canal, and scratching of the ears will appear. In severe cases, it can even lead to ear hematomas and other diseases, potentially damaging the cat's hearing. Secondly, sterile cotton swabs can be used for scraping and examined under a microscope. Finally, the cat can be taken to a pet hospital for an ear examination with an auriscope. Ear mites can be directly observed in the cat's ears when they are infected.

Initial judgment of ear mites can be made through clinical symptoms. Generally, after a cat contracts ear mites, symptoms such as frequent shaking of the head and scratching of the ears will appear. At the same time, the ear canal secretions are dark brown and accompanied by an unusual smell. When cleaning the cat's ears with a cotton swab, the cat will exhibit crazy leg kicking. When the ear mites become severe, it can even lead to ear hematomas, otitis media, and other diseases, resulting in hearing impairment. Daily prevention should include regularly cleaning the cat's ears and deworming, keeping the cat's ear canals dry and clean.

Cats with ear mites can also be diagnosed by using sterile cotton swabs to scrape the cat's ear wax for microscopic examination. Ear mites can be observed under the microscope. After confirming the diagnosis of ear mites, it is necessary to isolate the cat and treat it with medication. Ear mites are common parasites in cat's ear canals and can be transmitted to other dogs and cats. During the treatment, the cat's living environment and items should be thoroughly cleaned. The treatment should be stopped only after the cat has recovered completely to avoid repeated infections. When the cat's symptom of scratching its ears disappears, and no mites are found under microscopic examination of the ear wax, it indicates that the cat's ear mites are basically healed.
