How hot will a golden retriever get heatstroke?
Usually, when the room temperature exceeds 30 degrees, golden retrievers will feel very uncomfortable, and when it exceeds 35 degrees, they are likely to suffer from heatstroke. Therefore, in summer, avoid vigorous exercise for dogs, and pay attention to ventilation and cooling to prevent heatstroke. The normal temperature of a golden retriever is between 38.5 and 39.5 degrees. Although their temperature is higher than that of humans, golden retrievers have longer fur and no sweat glands in their skin, so their ability to withstand heat is not as strong as that of humans.
What are the symptoms of dog heatstroke?
The symptoms of dog heatstroke generally include an increase in body temperature above 40°C, loss of appetite, lethargy, sluggishness, accelerated breathing, rapid heartbeat, and panting. At this time, the dog is more likely to lie down with its whole body, including its head, on the ground, showing a tense expression and painful eyes. Stumbling, stretching its neck, foaming at the mouth, fainting, and even shock indicate severe heatstroke, which can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.
How to treat dog heatstroke
After a dog gets heatstroke, the owner can give the dog fever-reducing medicine or feed it with Chinese angelica to lower its temperature. However, it is best to consult a veterinarian before using these medications. When a dog shows signs of heatstroke, the owner should promptly send it to the veterinary hospital for appropriate measures to lower its temperature and avoid organ damage from high temperatures.
How to prevent dog heatstroke outdoors
When outdoor temperatures are high, avoid excessive outdoor exercise for dogs. Ensure that the dog has enough to drink, and spray its body with water to help it cool down through evaporation. For dogs with thick fur, consider trimming it beforehand. Avoid direct sunlight and let the dog stay in shady areas. If the temperature is too high, let the dog swim to cool down.
