How to Prevent Feline Urethral Obstruction

Preventing feline urethral obstruction can be approached from three aspects: increasing your cat's water intake, increasing its physical activity, and reducing stress.

  1. Increase your cat's water intake.

Insufficient water intake is a major cause of lower urinary tract diseases such as urolithiasis and cystitis. To prevent feline urethral obstruction, it's essential to increase your cat's water intake. If your cat doesn't like to drink water, you can try using an automatic water dispenser, adding goat's milk powder, or giving it meat broth to encourage drinking.

  1. Increase your cat's physical activity.

Appropriate exercise is beneficial to your cat's health and also helps with water circulation and urination. Encourage your cat to exercise regularly by playing with it using a catnip toy or a fake mouse, etc. You can also take your cat for walks outside to achieve the same goal.

  1. Reduce stress.

Cats may experience urethral obstruction under stressful conditions. Therefore, it's important to create a comfortable living environment for your cat, keep its mood uplifted, and avoid loud stimuli. Especially for cats with smaller personalities, it's recommended to minimize taking them to unfamiliar places.
