How to teach a cat to bury its poop
There are several ways to address a cat that doesn't know how to bury its poop:
Teach the cat to bury its poop through artificial demonstration. If the cat is too young to know how to bury its poop, the owner can teach it by demonstrating the behavior. After the cat finishes excreting, hold its small feet and show it how to dig the litter to bury the feces. With repeated teaching, the cat will learn.
Let the cat learn from a mother cat if there is one at home.
Regularly clean the litter box if the excretion environment is dirty. Cats are clean animals, and if the litter box is too dirty, they may flee immediately after excreting without burying their poop. Thus, owners must clean the litter box regularly and prepare an appropriate amount of litter to ensure sufficient burial.
Teaching the cat to bury poop through artificial demonstration
If a cat doesn't learn to bury its poop from its mother at a young age, the owner needs to teach it manually. After each visit to the litter box, the owner can hold the cat's paws and show it how to bury its feces. Reward the cat with treats like catnip or small fish snacks after it learns to bury its poop properly. With repeated training, the cat will develop a conditioned reflex and bury its own feces.
- Learning to bury poop from a mother cat
If possible, allow the kitten to live with a mother cat. The kitten will gradually learn to bury its poop from the mother cat, eliminating the need for the owner to worry about teaching it.
- Regularly clean the litter box
Cats are very clean animals. If the litter box is too dirty, they may hurry to leave after excreting without burying their poop. Therefore, owners must regularly clean the litter box and prepare an appropriate amount of litter to ensure sufficient burial. Otherwise, if there is not enough litter, it may not be enough to cover the feces.
