How to Treat Glaucoma in Dogs

Dog glaucoma mainly has two methods of treatment: medication and surgery. However, whether it can be cured depends on its severity. If the dog's owner does not take the dog to the pet hospital in time for treatment, the dog may go blind. Therefore, it is recommended that the owner take the dog to the pet hospital as soon as possible for inspection, and then decide on the treatment method according to the dog's eye condition. If necessary, surgery will be performed.

  1. Medication Treatment

1.1. Use hyperosmotic solutions systemically to increase blood osmolality and reduce aqueous humor to lower eye pressure. Commonly used are 20% mannitol 1-2g/kg, intravenous injection, or oral 50% glycerin 1-2ml/kg.

1.2. Use drugs that inhibit aqueous humor production and promote aqueous humor excretion. Commonly used are diclofenamide 10-30mg/kg and pilocarpine 1%-2% nasal drops. Mydriatic drugs help open blocked angles, improve aqueous humor circulation, and effectively lower eye pressure in dogs.

  1. Surgical Treatment

For dogs who do not respond to medication or have narrow-angle glaucoma or angle-closure glaucoma, surgical treatment should be considered. Common surgical procedures include iris incarceration, ciliary body separation, and laser coagulation.

Note: When using medication, strictly follow the doctor's advice and use the drugs according to the actual situation. Do not self-medicate to avoid delaying the condition.
