How to Treat Mucus on Cat's Mouth
The main causes of mucus hanging from a cat's mouth are oral diseases such as stomatitis, dental calculus, and oral ulcers. Additionally, it could be due to vomiting or poisoning. The former is more common, while the latter is less frequent. If it's caused by poisoning, it's recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital for treatment immediately.
Oral diseases stimulate the oral mucosa, causing excessive saliva production, and thus leading to mucus hanging from the cat's mouth. Stomatitis is a common disease, mainly caused by bacterial and viral infections.
Bacterial stomatitis can also cause mucus on a cat's mouth, which is relatively easy to cure. It is recommended to use antibacterial and anti-inflammatory oral sprays. Viral stomatitis is mainly caused by feline calicivirus, which has poor treatment efficacy. Generally, symptomatic treatment is adopted, such as cleaning the cat's mouth with a cleaner, and then using B-group vitamins, antiviral drugs, and oral sprays. If the conventional treatment is ineffective, tooth extraction may be necessary later. However, tooth extraction is traumatic for cats and requires relevant assessments.
Dental calculus easily stimulates a cat's gums, leading to increased saliva production and mucus hanging from the mouth. Mild dental calculus can be treated with dental cleaning powder, and severe cases require prompt veterinary intervention for dental scaling.
If oral diseases are ruled out, mucus hanging from a cat's mouth could be due to vomiting or poisoning. Causes of vomiting mainly include digestive system diseases such as viral enteritis and bacterial gastroenteritis. As gastrointestinal diseases usually present with diarrhea, they are relatively easy to detect and require timely medical attention. Poisoning refers to a cat accidentally ingesting rat poison or organic phosphorus insecticides等toxic substances. These toxic substances usually cause the cat to produce a large amount of saliva and can even lead to death. It is recommended to take the cat to the pet hospital for treatment promptly.
