How to treat Teddy dog urinary tract infection
The treatment for Teddy dog urinary tract infection first involves inflammation suppression, which can be achieved by administering long-acting antibiotics or taking anti-inflammatory medications. If the dog is unable to urinate, a urinary catheter should be inserted, and an ultrasound examination should be performed to check for the presence of stones or blood clots inside. Finally, a head cap should be worn by the dog to prevent excessive licking of the genitalia. After recovery, neutering the dog can be considered as an option.
Causes of urinary tract infection
The common pathogenic bacteria of dog urinary tract infection include staphylococcus and Escherichia coli, which cause infection after entering the bladder through the bloodstream. Some infections are also caused by fungal growth, reproduction, and invasion. Some cases are due to kidney inflammation, ureteritis, and cystitis, which spread to the bladder. Another cause is bladder stones and new tissue stimulation, which irritate the bladder mucosa.
Symptoms of urinary tract infection
Urinary tract infection generally presents with difficulties in urination, painful urination, cloudy urine, string-like urine, dog's discomfort and pain, painful urinary incontinence, intermittent urine excretion during urination, frequent flicking of the penis in male dogs, and continuous opening and closing of the vulva in female dogs. Sometimes, necrotic or sloughed urethral mucosa is passed. During palpation, the dog's penis may be swollen and sensitive, and the urethral opening may be red and swollen. When exploring the urethra, the dog shows pain and restlessness, and it is difficult to insert the urinary catheter.
Pharmacological treatment of urinary tract infection
The treatment must be individualized and should be based on the disappearance of clinical symptoms, abnormal urine sediment, and negative urine culture results. In general, non-complicated urinary tract infections should be treated for 2-3 weeks. Commonly used drugs include enrofloxacin-based medications for infection, along with analgesics and urinary protective agents. The dog should drink plenty of water and follow a regular diet. If it is a complicated urinary tract infection, medication should be taken under a doctor's advice.
