Split layers near cat's ears

The split layers near a cat's ears may be caused by attachments, fights, bacterial infections, ear mites, or other reasons. If it is a normal split layer due to attachments, there is generally no need to worry too much. If the split layer is abnormal and accompanied by other symptoms, such as skin redness, pain, itching, etc., it is recommended that the owner take the cat to a regular pet hospital in time for a detailed examination to identify the cause and treat it.

  1. Attachments

Cat's physiological structure is complex, and the ears being congenitally split is a normal structure. There are usually two layers, including the external ear canal and the internal ear canal. The external ear canal is composed of soft muscular skin, presenting a split-like appearance, responsible for capturing sound. The internal ear canal is a tightly structured layer of tissue, responsible for sound transmission. It can hear sounds that humans cannot, which is beneficial for cats to hunt in their surroundings. This is a normal physiological phenomenon and generally does not require medication treatment.

  1. Fights

If a cat gets into a fight with other animals, it may cause bite wounds to the ear skin, leading to skin splitting, redness, swelling, pain, and bleeding. You can use physiological saline or hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound, and then apply antibiotic ointment under the guidance of a doctor, which is beneficial for skin recovery.

  1. Bacterial Infections

Mainly caused by bacterial infections, incomplete cleaning can lead to local skin swelling and purulence, resulting in a split-like appearance. Medical advice should be followed to take antibiotic medications. In severe cases, it is recommended to take the cat to a pet hospital for intravenous antibiotic treatment.

  1. Ear Mites

Ear mites are parasites that live in the ear, possibly caused by poor local skin hygiene and water retention. They mainly live in the ear area, causing local itching, odor, and increased earwax. If not treated in time, it can lead to local skin abscesses and thus a split-like appearance. You need to use laxative or physiological saline to rinse the ear area and follow the doctor's advice to use parasite-repelling medications.
