Ways for Puppies to Survive the Winter

Puppies surviving the winter mainly include four aspects: proper warmth measures, feeding high-calorie food, maintaining air circulation, and adjusting the time for walking the dog.

Firstly, owners can prepare a warm and comfortable kennel for their dogs, and help them stay warm through electric blankets, hot water bags, and wearing clothes. Secondly, owners can feed their dogs high-calorie food to help them withstand the cold. Additionally, keeping the air circulating is also important. On sunny days, owners can appropriately open windows for ventilation. Lastly, when the weather is too cold or rainy, it is recommended not to take the dog outside, and adjust the walking time accordingly.

  1. Proper warmth measures

  2. Although dogs are mammals and maintain their body temperature, young puppies have not fully developed and their temperature control system is imperfect. Therefore, they are more susceptible to external environmental temperatures. In winter, owners need to prepare a warm and comfortable kennel for their dogs and place it in a sunny and wind-protected area. Also, frequently change and expose the kennel to sunlight to keep it dry.

  3. When the indoor temperature is below 21 degrees Celsius, owners can use physical heating methods such as electric blankets and hot water bags to increase the temperature. However, they should be wrapped in towels to prevent the puppies from being scalded.

  4. If a puppy has less fur, owners can also try dressing them up for warmth. However, they should note that regardless of the breed, the dog's clothing time should not be too long. They can wear clothes when playing outside, and remove them indoors to avoid skin problems caused by prolonged humidity.

  5. Feeding high-calorie food

Due to the cold winter, dogs' energy consumption increases. Owners can feed their dogs high-calorie food such as cooked animal internal organs, chicken breasts, carrots, and broccoli to help them withstand the cold. Also, in winter, owners should avoid feeding dogs cold or raw foods to prevent intestinal problems.

  1. Maintaining air circulation

If the doors and windows are closed tightly in winter, the air does not circulate, which is harmful to the dog's health and their own. Therefore, owners should also pay attention to maintaining air circulation. On sunny days, they can appropriately open windows for ventilation, making the environment more dry and comfortable.

  1. Adjusting the time for walking the dog

Due to the low temperatures in winter and puppies' weak resistance, owners can adjust the walking time accordingly. When the weather is too cold or rainy, it is recommended not to take the dog outside, and instead increase indoor physical activities. On days with good weather, owners can take their dogs outdoors for activities, promoting calcium absorption and benefiting the dog's bone growth and development.
