What are the reasons for a dog's loss of appetite?
A dog's loss of appetite may be caused by issues with their food, digestive problems, illness, internal parasite infections, or being in heat. If your dog shows signs of depression, abnormal temperature, excessive sleeping, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. in addition to loss of appetite, it is likely caused by an infectious disease, which is more serious and requires immediate consultation with a pet doctor for medication and treatment to increase the chances of recovery.
- Issues with food
If a dog suddenly develops a loss of appetite, it may be due to problems with their food, such as spoiled or tasted dog food, a lack of variety in their diet, or a new type of dog food that the dog does not like or has poor palatability. Moreover, giving a dog too many snacks, bones, and meat outside of mealtimes can also lead to picky eating and resistance to main meals.
- Digestive obstacles
If a dog's loss of appetite is a long-term issue, it may be caused by digestive obstacles. Some dogs have weaker digestive systems, lack beneficial bacteria and digestive enzymes, and do not feel hungry even if they eat little or nothing, resulting in a loss of appetite.
- Illness
A dog's loss of appetite may also be caused by illness, such as canine fever, parvovirus, viral enteritis, colds, intestinal disorders, fractures, and other diseases. In this case, owners should pay attention to their dog's mental state and bowel movements. If the dog shows signs of diarrhea, vomiting, fever, excessive sleeping, sneezing, runny nose, and depression, it is likely ill. It is recommended to consult a veterinarian and start treatment as soon as possible, and the dog's appetite will return once it recovers.
- Internal parasite infection
Internal parasite infections can also cause a dog's loss of appetite. In addition to loss of appetite, dogs may also frequently have diarrhea, and their feces may contain parasites. If the internal parasite is a roundworm, the dog may also show symptoms of chronic weight loss. It is recommended to take the dog to a pet hospital for a fecal examination and internal deworming to alleviate this problem.
- In heat
Dogs in heat may experience a decrease in appetite or even loss of appetite due to increased hormone secretion. This type of loss of appetite is relatively easy to solve. Just pay attention to the dog's hygiene and provide plenty of water. Once the dog's heat passes, it should return to normal eating habits.
